Ship "Index".
17b). - WW11 Convoy Escorts, - "Castle Class" Corvettes.
This complete section added - Early June 2012.
New photo entries are marked thus ( # ) - earlier entries are now unmarked.
In common with several other
sections on this site, "WW11 Convoy Escorts" had become overly large and
difficult to manage,
due to the ever increasing numbers of photographic
donations, being made by people,
wishing to see their wartime memories displayed
for the benefit of others.
The decision was made, therefore, to split it into
smaller and, hopefully, simpler sections to navigate for my sites visitors.
"Castle Class" Corvettes.
These
ships started to replace the much
smaller "Flower
Class"
Corvettes,
as can be seen in
sub section
17a,
from
around 1943 onwards.
They were quite larger, and more seaworthy than them, and it was fortunate
that most of the countries smaller shipbuilding yards
were able to accommodate their 250ft length.
Although slow, even though fitted with 2 sets of "Flower Class" boilers and engines,
the "Castles" were more suited to Atlantic
operations, and their bows were strong enough to be able to carry
the
"New" forward firing SQUID A.S.W. Mortar then just entering into wartime
service.
